The famous old “Lighthouse Pub & Restaurant” in a new location at the Mole…Reinvented!

About Us

The Lighthouse Pub & Restaurant was well known and well loved by locals and tourists alike. It went through difficult and uncertain times with a looming development making it difficult to keep it up to the standard - not knowing how long we had left in the original premises. Now the Lighthouse has a chance to return to the position in Swakopmund as a well loved family restaurant at the Mole offering a cozy atmosphere, relaxed feel, great food for a good price. Renovations have begun at the old Strand Café premises and we hope to be ready to open no later than June 2017!

The Lighthouse History

One of the most prominent landmarks in Swakopmund is certainly the towering lighthouse! It has a history of rugged resilience to the ebb and flow of the powerful Atlantic Ocean. The first lighthouse was established on the Mole. Despite intentions of creating a sheltered port, the little beacon could not weather the storms of the crashing Atlantic. Sadly, the little beacon was washed away not long after it’s construction.

The realization that the mighty Atlantic will tame even the strongest of wills promoted the  commissioning and erection of a hardier lighthouse. The building was erected 11 metres above sea level and towered 11 metres high!

From as early as 1903, the lighthouse illuminated the ocean for as far as 14 nautical miles. The Atlantic had commanded and controlled, but could not thwart the dogged persistence of that one light. The spirit of mankind and the radiance of the lighthouse joined forces to cross the raging seas, mindful of it’s powers yet determined to realize their individual aspirations.

The lighthouse received a “facelift” in 1910 when builder H.Wille was commissioned to raise it by 10 metres. In the present day, the stalwart lighthouse is 35.5 metres high and reaches 35 nautical miles. The mighty spotlight winks at the Atlantic twice within every 2,4 seconds, seeming to remind the ocean of it’s presence.

Today, the lighthouse continues to safeguard the area and perhaps it reminds us of one thing:

Shining light from our own position may not illuminate or conquer the entire world but it can be a guiding friend to others in need.
